NEWARK, NJ August 8, 2007 The Newark Bears scored five runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back as they went on to defeat the Somerset Patriots 10-2 at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Wednesday night. The Bears have now won four consecutive games, all against the Patriots, and six out of their last seven.
The Bears sent nine men to the plate in the five run first inning. Centerfielder Keith Reed drilled a three-run home run down the left field line to put the Bears up 3-0. With two outs, the Bears loaded the bases and catcher John Pachot lined a two-run double into the left-centerfield gap to cap the first inning scoring.
The Bears put the game away in the seventh inning with four runs. Reed hit his second home run of the game and 14th of the season, an opposite field solo shot. He finished the night 4-for-5 with two home runs and four RBI. Pachot followed later in the inning with a two RBI single. He went 2-for-5 with a double and four RBI.
Bears first baseman Victor Rodriguez extended his hitting streak to 20 games, tying him with Camdens L.J. Biernbaum for the longest in the Atlantic League this season. He was 2-for-5 on the night with a double and two runs scored.
Right-hander Delvis Pacheco (5-1) got the win for the Bears. He went six innings, allowing one run on eight hits and one walk, striking out one.
Patriots' right-handed starter Sam Marsonek (4-8) lasted just two-thirds of an inning, giving up five runs on three hits and three walks with one strikeout.
The Bears will go for the series sweep on Thursday night at 7:05 PM. Right-hander Mark Phillips (1-0) will make his second start for the Bears.
