BEARS LOSE TO ROAD WARRIORS 11-2
NEWARK, NJ – August 14, 2007 – The Newark Bears were defeated by the Road Warriors 11-2 Tuesday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Despite the loss, the Bears remain one game over .500 (16-15) in the second half of the 2007 season.
With bases loaded and two-outs in the top of the first inning Road Warriors left-fielder Jason Bryan and shortstop Josh Arteaga hit RBI singles, and right-fielder Steven Doetsch hit a two-run single to give the Road Warriors a 4-0 lead.
Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Bears first baseman Victor Rodriguez hit a two-run single to cut the Road Warriors lead to 5-2. Rodriguez ended the game 3-for-4 with two RBI.
For the Road Warriors, Doetsch ended the game 4-for-5 including RBI singles in the top of the fourth and top of the eighth, while third baseman Ron Fenwick went 2-for-5 with an RBI double in the top of the seventh and a two-run double in the top of the eighth.
Mark Phillips (1-2) took the loss allowing six runs on eight hits in four innings, while Randy Dicken (1-6) earned the victory tossing six innings surrendering two runs on five hits striking out six.
The Bears and Road Warriors will play game two of the three-game series Wednesday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Jose Garcia (2-0) will take the mound for the Bears against Charlie Hesseltine (1-4) for the Road Warriors.
