BEARS KNOTTS NAMED AL PITCHER OF THE MONTH

NEWARK, NJ – August 2, 2007 – The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball announced Newark Bears right-handed starting pitcher Gary Knotts has been voted AL Pitcher of the Month for the month of July. Knotts, whose contract was sold to the Philadelphia Phillies on July 31, becomes the second Bears pitcher this season to receive the award.

Knotts made five starts for the Bears posting a 4-0 record allowing only eight runs, six earned, in 39 innings pitched. In addition, he held the opposing batters to a .185 batting average, and finished with an ERA of 1.38 while striking out 25 batters.

Currently, Knotts is ranked first in the Atlantic League in ERA, second in strikeouts and complete games with two, including a complete game 1-0 shutout against the York Revolution on July 2, and fourth in innings pitched.

Bridgeport Bluefish first baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke was voted the AL Player of the Month with a .366 batting average. He had 37 hits, including 13 home runs and five doubles, in 28 games played.

Bears right-handed pitcher Matt Sweeney was named AL co-Pitcher of the Month for the month of May before his contract was purchased by the Houston Astros on June 30.
