NEWARK, NJ – August 24, 2007 – The Newark Bears jumped out to a 6-0 lead and fought off a comeback attempt by the York Revolution to win 10-8 on Friday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The Bears are now 10-1 against York this season and 5-0 at home.
The Bears grabbed a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After loading the bases with no one out, second baseman Javier Colina ripped a double to left field to make it 2-0. A York throwing error made it 3-0 and first baseman Corey Smith followed with a sacrifice-fly to deep right field for the fourth run of the inning.
The Bears added a run in the second on an RBI single by third baseman Ramon Castro and one in the fourth when shortstop Donaldo Mendez scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 6-0. Castro led the Bears offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
York rallied back with five unanswered runs to cut the deficit to one. In the top half of the fifth, right-fielder Jason Aspito smacked a two-run home run to right field to make it 6-2. The Revolution rallied for three more in the seventh as shortstop Rayner Bautista hit an RBI single through the left side of the infield and first baseman Nate Espy lined a two-run double to the left-centerfield gap. Bautista finished the night 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. He has hit safely in 22 consecutive games, tying the York franchise record.
In the bottom half of the seventh, right-fielder Jose Herrera pushed the Bears lead to 8-5 with a two-run home run to right field. Herrera ended the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI.
The Revolution responded with two solo home runs in the top of the eighth to bring the score to 8-7. With one out, Aspito hit his second of the game, and 11th of the year, and two batters later third baseman Matt Dryer lifted one over the wall in left.
The Bears added two insurance runs in their half of the eighth for a 10-7 lead. Castro brought home Mendez with an infield single and centerfielder Keith Reed followed with a run-scoring single to right.
Bears’ starter Delvis Pacheco (7-2) got the win. In six innings of work, he allowed four earned runs on six hits and a walk, striking out five. Closer Jason DiAngelo got the save, his 13th of the year.
The Bears will go for the sweep on Saturday evening with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM. Left-hander Mark Phillips (1-2) will take the mound for the Bears against York’s Jason Olson (4-2).
