BEARS EIGHT RUN SIXTH TOPS ROAD WARRIORS 11-8
NEWARK, NJ – August 15, 2007 – Trailing 8-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Newark Bears third baseman Pat Peavey and first baseman Victor Rodriguez each hit a three-run home run en route to an eight run inning and a 11-8 defeat over the Road Warriors Wednesday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
On top of the Peavey’s fourth home run and Rodriguez’s ninth, right-fielder Keith Reed hit an RBI double and left-fielder Joey Gomes hit an RBI single to cap the eight run sixth inning.
With the Road Warriors ahead 2-1 entering the top of the second inning, right-fielder Jason Bryan hit his 11th home run of the season while third baseman Ron Fenwick and shortstop Josh Arteaga each hit RBI doubles to give the Road Warriors a 5-1 advantage. Bears shortstop Ramon Castro hit an infield RBI single in the bottom of the second inning to cut the lead to 5-2.
The score remained the same until the top of the fourth when Road Warriors designated hitter Vito Chiaravolloti hit an RBI single followed by an RBI double by first baseman Ian Bladergroen putting the Road Warriors ahead 7-2. Rodriguez hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth for the Bears, and Arteaga gave the Road Warriors the 8-3 lead with an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning.
For the Bears, Castro ended the game 4-for-4 with three singles, a double, one run scored, and two RBI, while Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with one run scored and four RBI. For the Road Warriors Chiaravolloti finished the game 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI and Arteaga went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI.
Edwin Almonte (2-4) earned the victory tossing 2.2 scoreless relief innings allowing only two hits striking out two and Jason DiAngelo earned his 12th save of the season striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning. Kevin Mannix (0-3) took the loss surrendering three runs on four hits in one inning of work.
The Bears and Road Warriors will complete the three-game series Thursday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 AM. Jeriome Robertson (3-2) against Damien Myers (2-11) for the Road Warriors.
