BEARS EARN SPLIT WITH 9-6 GAME TWO VICTORY

NEWARK, NJ – August 13, 2007 – The Newark Bears defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 6-5 Monday afternoon in game two of the doubleheader at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win, the Bears earned a split in the doubleheader and improved their overall record to 52-41.

The Bears jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when first baseman Victor Rodriguez hit a two-out two-run double to plate center-fielder Keith Reed and second baseman Javier Colina. After Rodriguez scored on a throwing error, right-fielder Jose Herrera capped the scoring with an RBI double.

Leading 6-1 in the bottom of the third inning, third baseman Corey Smith led off with a solo home run, his 12^th of the season, and shortstop Ramon Castro ripped an RBI double to give Newark a 9-1 lead.

Lancaster cut the lead to 9-5 in the top of the fourth inning when third baseman Steve Van Note and center-fielder Jutt Hileman each connected for two-run home runs. For Van Note it was his sixth, and Hileman his 14^th.

The Bears were led by Reed who ended the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Herrera who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. First baseman Eric Crozier led the Barnstormers finishing the day 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Delvis Pacheco (6-1) earned the victory allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits in six innings, while Josh Stevens (8-6) took the loss surrendering nine runs, five earned, on eight hits in three innings. Edwin Almonte picked up his seventh save of the season throwing a scoreless seventh inning striking out one.

The Bears will begin a three-game series against the Road Warriors at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium Tuesday evening with first pitch scheduled for 5:05 PM.
