BEARS BEAT PATRIOTS 10-5; WIN THIRD STRAIGHT
NEWARK, NJ – August 7, 2007 – Newark Bears starter Harold Eckert threw six scoreless innings striking out nine and center-fielder Marcus Nettles went 3-for-5 with four stolen bases, tying his franchise record, as the Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 10-5 Tuesday evening at Commerce Bank Ballpark. With the win, the Bears have won their third straight game improving their second half record to 13-10.
Nettles led off the top of the first inning with a single. He stole second base and reach third base on an error by Patriots catcher Travis Anderson. He would come around to score when shortstop Ramon Castro hit an RBI groundout.
With two outs in the top of the second inning, and already leading 1-0, right-fielder Jose Herrera singled, left-fielder Ruben Mateo ripped an RBI double, and catcher John Pachot and Nettles each hit RBI singles to give Newark an early 4-0 advantage. Mateo ended the game 4-for-4 with two doubles, a single, a solo home run in the top of the sixth, his first of the season, two RBI, and three runs scored.
For the Patriots, first baseman Josh Pressley went 1-for-2 with a grand slam in the Patriots five run eighth inning, for his 11th home run of the season.
Bears first baseman Victor Rodriguez singled in the seventh inning to extend his team-high hitting streak to 19 games.
Brandon Knight (6-4) took the loss for the Patriots yielding seven runs, six earned, on eight hits in 4.1 innings pitched.
The Bears and Patriots will play game two of the three-game series Wednesday evening at Commerce Bank Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM.
