NEWARK, NJ – August 31, 2007 – The 2007 First-Half North Division Champion Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club announced the signings of pitchers Jeremy Hill, Dusty Bergman, and Mark Woodyard.  

 

Hill began the season with the Bears before he was signed to pitch in the Taiwan Professional Baseball League.  In 12 innings he went 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 11 strikeouts.  In 2006 with the Bears, Hill ranked second on the team with 56 relief appearances, posting a team high seven victories with an ERA of 3.62.  The former Kansas City Royal right-hander finished third in the Atlantic League in games pitched. 

 

Bergman, a left-handed starter, joins the Bears after pitching for Reno of the Golden League.  In 15 games, he went 6-4 with the league’s third best ERA at 3.40.  His 100.2 innings pitched also ranked third.  From 2002 to 2006, Bergman spent the majority of his time at the triple-A level.  In 2004, he was called up to the Major Leagues for a short stint with the Anaheim Angels.  In 2005 with Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League, Bergman was 8-5 with a 3.17 ERA. 

 

Woodyard comes to the Bears from St. George, also of the Golden League.  The right-hander carried a 4.44 ERA in 16 starts for the club.  Woodyard was ranked second in the league in complete games (3) and innings pitched (105.1).  In 2005, he was called up to the Major Leagues with the Detroit Tigers.  In six innings, he allowed just one run on four hits with three strikeouts. 

 

To make room on the active roster, the Bears released right-hander pitcher Brendon Davis, infielder Donaldo Mendez, and outfielder Jack Headley.  Right-hander starter Carlos Mirabal was placed on the disabled list.
