ADAMS SNAPS BEARS WINNING STREAK
NEWARK, NJ – July 1, 2007 – Somerset Patriots starter Brian Adams (12-2) allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits in 6.1 innings to defeat the Newark Bears 5-3 Thursday evening at Commerce Bank Ballpark. Despite the loss, the Bears won the first two games to win their seventh straight series, and five of the six against the Patriots this season.
Somerset jumped on the board in the bottom of the third inning when right-fielder Elliot Ayala hit an RBI single scoring first baseman Alan Zinter. Ayala would steal second and third base, and would score on a wild pitch to give Somerset the 2-0 lead.
The Patriots would add to the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when shortstop Jose Morban belted a two-run home run, his sixth of the season, putting the Patriots ahead 4-0. The Bears would cut the lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth when right-fielder Ruben Mateo hit a one out RBI double.
Trailing 5-1 entering the top of the seventh, second baseman Vic Gutierrez drew a two-out bases loaded walk, and shortstop Ramon Castro reached on a throwing error by Patriots third baseman Brandon Larson to plate the third Bears run.
For the Bears, Mateo finished the game 1-for-3 with a double, walk, and an RBI, while first baseman Victor Rodriguez went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 21 straight games. Zinter led the Patriots going 2-for-3 with a single, double, RBI, and run scored.
Marc Phillips (1-1) took the loss after surrendering five runs on six hits in 5.1 innings pitched and R.D. Spiehs picked up his 13th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Bears will begin a three-game series against the Long Island Ducks Friday evening at Citibank Park with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM.
