JACKHAMMERS WIN THIRD STRAIGHT WITH AN 8-3 VICTORY OVER THE FLYERS
Juan Diaz Hits His Northern League Leading 26th Home Run of the Season in the Win
JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers (20-25) got a solid offensive performance on Thursday night by scoring eight runs on 11 hits to beat the Schaumburg Flyers (19-26) 8-3 before 2,681 fans at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers are currently on a three-game winning streak.
The Schaumburg Flyers scored first with a single run in the first inning against JackHammers starting pitcher Matt Smith (6-8). Christian Snavely (2-3) pulled a solo home run over the right field wall to make it 1-0 in favor of the Flyers.
The Flyers pushed across another run in the third inning to make it 2-0 before the JackHammers went to work in the fourth inning. Jake Whitesides (2-4) singled and stole second base. Chris Brown (1-3) hit a single to move Whitesides to third base. Whitesides scored on a double steal executed beautifully by the JackHammers to put them within one run at 2-1. Brown went to second base on the play.
Matt Mazurek (1-2) hit an RBI single to score Brown and tie the game at 2-2.
The JackHammers pushed across three runs in the fifth inning to make it a 5-2 lead. Juan Diaz (3-4) led off the inning with a single and went to second base on a single by Derek Nicholson (1-5). A walk to Whitesides loaded the bases for Dennis Blackmon (1-3), who hit an RBI single to score Diaz and make it 3-2 in favor of the JackHammers.
Brown hit a sacrifice fly to score Nicholson and Mazurek reached base at first on a fielder’s choice to bring home Whitesides and give the JackHammers a 5-2 lead.
The Flyers scored a single run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Snavely before the JackHammers got a run back in the seventh inning when Blackmon lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Whitesides.
The JackHammers had a 6-2 lead when Diaz crushed a pitch by Flyers right-hander Randy Dunnett in the eighth inning over the left field wall for his team-leading 26th home run.
Loose Gravel: Diaz now has the JackHammers single-season record for home runs with 26. He eclipsed the old mark of 23 set by Jayson Drobiak in the 2005 season.
The JackHammers and Flyers take on one another in game three of their series on Friday night. Brian Forystek (4-4, 2.95) gets the ball for the JackHammers against Nat Harris (9-7, 5.05) for the Schaumburg Flyers. The first pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and pre-game coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on www.jackhammerbaseball.com and on www.sportsjuice.com. Friday’s broadcast will not be on AM 1340 WJOL because of scheduling conflicts with high school football.
