JACKHAMMERS BEAT RAILCATS 7-2 IN A MAKE-UP GAME ON TUESDAY

JOLIET, IL- The Joliet JackHammers (18-25) scored four runs in the eighth inning, including a perfectly-executed suicide squeeze by Eric Scriven (1-3) to beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats (24-19) by a score of 7-2 at Silver Cross Field on Tuesday night. With the win, the JackHammers snap a six-game losing streak.

The RailCats scored a single run off of JackHammers right-hander Nate Sevier (12-4) in the third inning. Mike Reese (2-4) hit a triple and scored when Tanner Townsend (2-4) lined a sinngle. The RailCats took a 1-0 lead.

The JackHammers tied the game with a single run in the third inning. Chris Brown (1-2) reached base with a single to lead off the inning and was retired when Matt Mazurek (1-4) went to first base on a fielder’s choice. He moved to second base on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Cory Harris (1-4).

Joliet tacked on two runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Derek Nicholson (1-4) reached base on a walk and went to second base on a single by Jake Whitesides (2-5).

Mazurek followed with an RBI single to score Nicholson and Scriven hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Whitesides.

The RailCats got within one run at 3-2 on an RBI single by Eric McNamee (1-4) in the fifth inning before the JackHammers pushed across four runs in the eighth inning.

Whitesides reached base with a double and stole third base. After Dennis Blackmon (1-3) and Brown each worked walks, Mazurek struck out. Eric Scriven executed a suicide squeeze, as Whitesides scored from third base to make it 4-2 in favor of the JackHammers.

Harris walked to load the bases and Tim Hutting (2-5) hit a two-run single to score Blackmon and Brown. The JackHammers had a 6-2 lead and tacked on one run to make it 7-2.

Sevier pitched eight innings and allowed two runs on six hits to pick up the victory. Matt Petrusek worked a scoreless ninth inning to close out the game.

Loose Gravel: Sevier now joins Dane Renkert of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks for the Northern League lead with 12 wins.

The JackHammers begin the final home stand of the season with a five-game series against the Schaumburg Flyers at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday night. Dan Grybash (9-5, 3.49) gets the start for the Schaumburg Flyers against James Garcia (0-3, 8.00) for the Joliet JackHammers. The first pitch is at 7:05 p.m. and pre-game coverage begins at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com.
