RAILCATS USE THE BIG INNING TO WIN 7-5 OVER THE JACKHAMMERS

 

GARY, IN-The Gary SouthShore RailCats (24-18) scored four runs in the sixth inning to beat the Joliet JackHammers (17-25) by a score of 7-5 before 3,676 fans at U.S. Steel Yard on Monday night. The JackHammers closed out their 2007 road schedule with the loss.

 

Gary scored one early run against JackHammers right-handed pitcher Josh Regits (1-4) in the first inning. Eric McNamee (1-2) reached base with a walk and went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Jay Pecci (1-3). Eric Blakely (0-3) followed Pecci’s sacrifice with a walk of his own.

 

Steve Haake (0-3) hit a sacrifice fly to move McNamee to third base. He scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0 in favor of the RailCats.

 

In the second inning Gary tacked on another run against Regits. Jermaine Allensworth (3-4) hit a leadoff single and scored on a double by Tanner Townsend (3-4). The RailCats took a 2-0 lead but the JackHammers came back to cut the lead in half in the third inning.

 

Matt Mazurek (3-4) hit a one-out double and scored on a double by Cory Harris (3-4). The JackHammers came within one run at 2-1.

 

The JackHammers tied the game with a run in the fifth inning. Mazurek reached base with a one-out single and went to second base on a single by Harris. Tim Hutting (1-5) reached base on a fielder’s choice and the game was tied at 2-2.

 

In the RailCats’ fifth inning, Nate Price (2-3) led off the inning with a single and stole second base. He advanced to third base on a groundout by David Detienne (0-4) and score on a sacrifice fly by McNamee. The RailCats took a 3-2 lead.

 

Gary pushed across four runs in the sixth inning. Haake walked and went to second base on a single by Jose Yepez (1-4). Allensworth hit an RBI single to score Haake and give the RailCats a 4-2 lead.

 

Gary scored three more runs to provide enough run support for Jason Shelley (7-4), who pitched six and one-thirds innings and allowed four runs on eight hits to pick up the win.

 

The JackHammers scored two runs in the seventh inning. Dennis Blackmon (0-4) reached base to start off the inning on an error and went to second base on a single by Mazurek. Both runners advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Harris was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

 

Hutting hit a two-run double to score Blackmon and Mazurek and bring the JackHammes within three runs at 7-4.

 

Harris hit a solo home run in the ninth inning to get the JackHammers within two runs at 7-5.

 

Loose Gravel: Harris made his first start of the season in left field for the JackHammers. He is the only JackHammer to play all three outfield positions in the 2007 season.

 

The JackHammers and RailCats play a make-up game on Tuesday night at 6:05 p.m. at Silver Cross Field. Nate Sevier (11-4, 4.83) will start for the JackHammers against Travis Kerber (7-6, 4.56) for the Gary SouthShore RailCats.
