RAILCATS HOLD OFF JACKHAMMERS FOR A 4-3 WIN
GARY, IN-The Joliet JackHammers (17-24) scored three runs in the eighth inning thanks to a three-run double by Matt Mazurek (1-2) but could not complete the comeback and lost 4-3 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats (23-18) before 4,106 fans at U.S. Steel Yard on Sunday afternoon.
The RailCats scored three runs in the first inning against JackHammers starting pitcher Brian Forystek (1-4). Eric McNamee (1-4) struck out to lead off the game but reached first base on a wild pitch. Jay Pecci (1-4) followed with a groundout. McNamee advanced to second on another wild pitch from Forystek.
Eric Blakely (1-4) singled to score McNamee and make it 1-0 in favor of the RailCats. Mike Reese (2-4) hit an RBI triple to bring home Blakely and make it 2-0.
Jose Yepez (0-3) grounded out to score Reese and give the RailCats a 3-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, Jermaine Allensworth (1-3) singled and went to second base on a single by Tanner Townsend (2-4). Dale Mueller (0-2) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position.
McNamee lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Allensworth and make it 4-0,
The JackHammers scored all three of their runs in the eighth inning. Chris Brown (1-3) worked a walk and went to second base when Eric Scriven (0-4) reached first base on an error. Cory Harris (0-2) singled to load the bases and Mazurek hit a three-run double to bring the JackHammers within one run at 4-3.
Forystek pitched six innings for the JackHammers and allowed four runs on nine hits. He walked three and struck out five.
Willie Glen (11-1) pitched six scoreless innings for the RailCats to earn the win.
Loose Gravel: Glen struck out two JackHammers hitters to tie the Northern League record for strikeouts in a single-season with 153. Winnipeg Goldeyes right-hander Bobby Madritsch set the mark in 2002.
The JackHammers and RailCats wrap up their series on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. Josh Regits (1-3, 5.10) will get the start for the JackHammers against Jason Shelley (6-4, 5.10) for the RailCats.
