REDHAWKS WITH TWO BIG INNINGS TO GET A 5-2 WIN OVER THE JACKHAMMERS
FARGO, ND-The Joliet JackHammers (14-14) surrendered four runs over the fourth and fifth innings to lose 5-2 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (21-9) before 4,660 fans at Newman Outdoor Field on Tuesday night.
The JackHammers scored a run in the first inning against RedHawks starting pitcher Joe Sergent (5-1). Tim Hutting (2-5) hit a one-out bloop double to left field for the JackHammers first hit of the game.
Juan Diaz (1-2) and Chad Ehrnsberger (0-3) followed with walks to load the bases for Derek Nicholson, who hit a slow-rolling ground ball to the RedHawks short stop Kory Wayment. Wayment threw out Nicholson at first base and Hutting scored from third base. The JackHammers took a 1-0 lead.
The RedHawks scored the tying run in the third inning against JackHammers starting pitcher James Garcia (0-1). Adam Shorsher (1-3) led off the inning with a single and went to second base on a single by Dan Maycock (3-3). Joe Mathis (0-3) grounded out to first base to move both runners up one base.
Mike Just (1-4) hit an RBI single to center field to score Shorsher and tie the game at 1-1.
Fargo-Moorhead scored two runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Ruben Salazar (1-4) reached base with a one-out single and went to third on a double by Billy Munoz (1-3).
Kory Wayment (1-3) hit a single to score Salazar and give the RedHawks a 2-1 lead. Munoz moved to third base on the play and scored on a throwing error to make it 3-1.
The JackHammers got a run back in the fifth inning to get within one run at 3-2. Hutting singled and advanced to third base on back-to-back walks by Diaz and Ehrnsberger. Nicholson worked a walk to score Hutting and make it 3-2.
The RedHawks scored two more runs to put the game away in the fifth inning. Maycock led off the inning with a single and went to third base when Mathis reached second base.
Tydus Meadows (2-4) hit a two-run double to score Mathis and Maycock and give the RedHawks a three-run lead.
Garcia pitched seven innings for the JackHammers and suffered the loss. He allowed five runs, (three earned runs), on nine hits while walking one and striking out three.
Loose Gravel: Nicholson drove in both runs for the JackHammers without the benefit of a hit. He finished 0-3 with a groundout and two RBIs.
The JackHammers and RedHawks battle in game two of their three-game series on Wednesday night. The JackHammers will start Matt Smith (5-6, 5.11) against Dane Renkert (11-1, 3.43) for the RedHawks.
