JACKHAMMERS SCORE EIGHT IN THE SEVENTH INNING TO BEAT
WINNIPEG, MANITOBA, CANADA-The Joliet JackHammers (14-14) came back from a 2-1 hole with eight runs in the seventh inning to beat the Winnipeg Goldeyes (14-15) 9-4 at CanWest Global Park before 6,184 fans on Sunday afternoon. The JackHammers and Kansas City T-Bones both won on Sunday so the JackHammers remain two and one-half games behind the T-Bones for first place in the Northern League South Division.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes scored two runs in the first inning against JackHammers right-handed starting pitcher Josh Regits (1-1). Demond Smith (3-4) hit a one-out single and went to second base on a bloop single to center field by Chris Latham (2-3).
Antoin Gray (2-4) hit a two-run single to score both runners and make it 2-0 in favor of
The JackHammers got one run back in the second inning. Jake Whitesides (2-5) hit a one-out triple to right centerfield against Goldeyes starter Brandon Kintzler. Dennis Blackmon (1-4) hit an RBI groundout to Goldeyes third baseman Brent Metheny to score Whitesides and bring the JackHammers within one run at 2-1.
Whitesides hit a single to move Nicholson to third base and went to second base on an error by the Goldeyes right fielder Chris Latham. Dennis Blackmon (1-4) followed with a two-run single to score both runners and make it 4-2 in favor of
Chris Brown (1-4) followed with a single and Eric Scriven (1-3) reached base on an error to load the bases.
Cory Harris (1-4) hit an RBI single to score Blackmon and Hutting worked a walk to score Brown. The JackHammers took a 6-2 lead.
The JackHammers scored three more runs in the inning to take a commanding seven run lead.
Regits pitched six innings and allowed two runs on six hits and walked two while striking out one to pick up his first professional win.
Loose Gravel: The JackHammers turned an unusual double play on Sunday afternoon. With runners at first and second base and the Goldeyes at the plate in the sixth inning, Gray hit a ground ball in front of home plate. JackHammers catcher Dennis Blackmon threw to third base to force out the lead runner Demond Smith. JackHammers third baseman Chad Ehrnsberger noticed that Gray did not run to first base so Ehrnsberger threw out Gray at first base. The scoring of the double play went 2-5-3.
The JackHammers have a day off on Monday before heading to Fargo to begin a three-game series with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. James Garcia (0-0, 6.75) will get the ball for the JackHammers Joe Sergent (4-1, 4.24) for the RedHawks.
