JACKHAMMERS CATCHER DENNIS BLACKMON THE HERO ONCE AGAIN IN A 7-6 VICTORY OVER EDMONTON

 

JOLIET, IL-For the second consecutive night, the Joliet JackHammers trailed the Edmonton Cracker-Cats heading into eighth inning and for the second consecutive night the JackHammers got a game-winning hit from Dennis Blackmon (1-4), who hit an RBI double in the eighth inning to give the Joliet JackHammers (13-12) a 7-6 win over the Edmonton Cracker-Cats (9-17) at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers finish off their six-game home stand with a 4-1 record and head to the road in sole possession of second place in the Northern League South Division. Blackmon hit a game-winning single in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s 6-5 win over Edmonton.

Joliet scored three runs in the first inning against Edmonton starting pitcher Lou Pote.

Tim Hutting (2-4) reached base with a one-out single and scored on a two-run home run by Juan Diaz (2-4) over the center field wall. The JackHammers took a 2-0 lead.

 

Chad Ehrnsberger (1-4) followed the home run with a double and scored on a single by Bobby Mosby (2-3). The JackHammers took a 3-0 lead.

 

The JackHammers scored a run in the second inning to increase their lead to 4-0. Chris Brown (1-4) hit a one-out single and went to second base on a base hit by Hutting. Diaz hit an RBI single to right field to score Brown.

 

Edmonton scored first in the third inning with a single run against JackHammers starting pitcher Matt Smith. CF Kevin House (1-4) hit a one-out single and stole second base. Tim Ryan (1-3) grounded out to JackHammers first baseman Bobby Mosby to move House to third base.

 

George Sandell (2-4) followed with an infield single to score House and get the Cracker-Cats within three runs at 4-1.

 

The Cracker-Cats scored four runs in the fifth inning to take their first lead of the game at 5-4. Ryan hit a two-out single against JackHammers right-hander Matt Smith. He went to second base on a walk. Both Ryan and Sandel advanced one base into scoring position.

 

Brian Munhall (1-5) hit a two-run single to score Ryan and Sandel and bring the Cracker-Cats within one run at 4-3.

 

Ryan Radmanovich (2-5) hit a two-run home run to give the Cracker-Cats their first lead of the game at 5-4.

 

Edmonton added one run in the seventh inning before Joliet came back with three runs in the eighth inning. Derek Nicholson (2-4) hit a one-out single and went to second base on a single by Mosby.

 

As Jake Whitesides (1-4) strolled up to the plate for the JackHammers, Joliet lifted Mosby from first base in favor of pinch-runner Matt Mazurek. Whietsides hit a two-run triple to right centerfield to tie the game at 6-6.

 

Blackmon came up to the plate and hit an RBI double to left field to give the JackHammers a 7-6 lead in a game they won by the same margin.

 

Derrick Ellison (5-1) pitched two scoreless innings and allowed one hit to pick up his fifth victory of the season. Matt Petrusek pitched a scorless ninth inning to get his 10th save of the season.

 

Loose Gravel: Smith got a no-decision for the JackHammers, throwing six innings and allowing six runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out two.

 

The JackHammers begin a six-game road trip Friday night in Winnipeg. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m. and pre-game coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on AM 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com. Nate Sevier (10-2, 4.77) will start for the JackHammers against Joel Posey (6-5, 4.69) for the Winnipeg Goldeyes.
