JACKHAMMERS CATCHER DENNIS BLACKMON GIVES JOLIET A 6-5 VICTORY OVER EDMONTON ON WEDNESDAY

JOLIET, IL-The Joliet JackHammers (12-12) scored eight runs in the eighth inning to come from behind to beat the Edmonton Cracker-Cats 6-5 at Silver Cross Field on Wednesday night. JackHammers catcher Dennis Blackmon (3-4) hit a game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning to give Joliet its first victory of the series.

The Edmonton Cracker-Cats scored first against JackHammers right-handed starting pitcher James Garcia. Brian Muhall (1-3) worked a one-out walk and went to second base on a single by Todd Betts (1-5). Terence McClain (1-4) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Clint Johnston (2-4) hit an RBI single to score Munhall and give Edmonton a 1-0 lead.

Edmonton scored two runs in the third inning on a two-run home run by McClain (1-4) to take a 3-0 lead.

The Cracker-Cats added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings before Joliet started its comeback in the eighth inning.

Blackmon led off the inning with a single and went to second base when Chris Brown (1-4) reached on a single. He moved to second base on an error and Blackmon scored from second base to put the JackHammers on the board at 5-1.

Brown scored on an RBI single by Tim Hutting (2-4) to bring the JackHammers within three runs at 5-2.

Cracker-Cats right-hander Reggie Rivard (1-7) walked Chad Ehrnsberger (0-3) and Derek Nicholson (0-3) to load the bases.

Bobby Mosby (2-4) followed with a two-run single to score Hutting and Ehrnsberger and bring the JackHammers within two runs at 5-4.

Nicholson scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 5-5 and Mosby moved over to third base on the play. Blackmon then stepped up to the plate and beat out a ground ball on the left side of the infield for a single, as Mosby scored from third base to make it 6-5 Joliet.

Aaron Williams (3-4) pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings for the victory and Matt Petrusek worked a scoreless ninth inning to get his ninth victory of the season.

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers used two new additions in Wednesday’s game. RHP James Garcia started the game for Joliet and pitched five and one-thirds innings-allowing three runs on nine hits to a get a “no decision.” He originally pitched for the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League in 2007 and went 4-2 with a 6.32 ERA. The JackHammers also added LHP Jason Cierlik to work out of the bullpen. Cierlik was 1-3 with a 6.00 ERA with the St. Paul Saints in 2007 before signing with the JackHammers. He pitched one-third of an inning on Wednesday.

The JackHammers and Cracker-Cats finish their three-game series on Thursday night at Silver Cross Field. Lou Pote (6-4, 2.93) will start the game for the Cracker-Cats against Matt Smith (5-6, 4.87) for the JackHammers.
