RHP SMITH TOSSES SECOND COMPLETE GAME OF THE SEASON AGAINST GARY IN A 3-0 WIN

JOLIET, IL-Joliet JackHammers right-handed pitcher Matt Smith (5-6) logged a complete game, two-hit shutout and Chris Brown (1-3) hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to lead the JackHammers to a 3-0 victory over the Gary SouthShore RailCats before 5,112 fans at Silver Cross Field on Friday night.

Smith retired eight of the first nine hitters he faced and surrendered a two-out walk to RailCats number nine hitter Eric McNamee (0-2) in the third inning. Gary got two runners aboard in the sixth inning on an error and a fielder’s choice and with two outs in the inning, Smith made a diving play on a ground ball hit by Jay Pecci that hit off his leg. He picked the ball up and dove towards first base, throwing out Pecci and keeping the no-hitter intact.

The RailCats got their first hit in the seventh inning when Steve Haake (1-4) hit a one-out single.

Gary got another runner aboard two batters later when Eric Blakely (0-3) reached base on an error. The RailCats got a two-out double from Mike Reese (1-4) in the eighth inning before Smith retired four consecutive RailCats to earn his second complete-game of the season.

Smith logged a complete game against the RailCats on July 13 at Silver Cross Field and allowed one run on six hits over nine innings. Both complete games in Smith’s eight-year career have come against the RailCats.

In the fifth inning, the JackHammers got all the offense they needed against RailCats starting pitcher Jason Shelley (3-3). Jake Whitesides (0-2) worked a one-out walk and went to second base on a single by Dennis Blackmon (1-3). Brown followed with a three-run home run to give the JackHammers a 3-0 lead.

Loose Gravel: The JackHammers made a flurry of roster moves before the game, trading two players and acquiring two other players. The JackHammers traded catcher Kevin Sullivan to the St. Paul Saints of the American Association for a player to be named later. The JacHammers also sent RHP Raymond Jenkins to the Kansas City T-Bones for a player to be named later.

Joliet also acquired 1B Bobby Mosby from the River City Rascals of the Frontier League. He hit .273 with 19 home runs and 53 RBIs in 62 games with the Rascals. Mosby went 1-3 with a double in his JackHammers debut at first base on Friday night. Derek Nicholson (0-2) played left field for the JackHammers.

The JackHammers also signed RHP Josef Walentin to a contract before the game. He played collegiate baseball at Concordia (Bronx, NY) College and pitched professionally in the New York State League before joining the JackHammers.

The JackHammers and RailCats continue their three-game series on Saturday night at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers will host the Silver Cross Heart and Diamond 5K run with participants running through Silver Cross Field to get to the finish line. The JackHammers will also present the Will and Grundy Counties Building Trades Koozie Giveaway to the first 1,000 fans.

Legendary entertainer Myron Noodleman will entertain fans at the ballpark. The action starts at 7:05 p.m.
