FIVE-RUN SEVENTH GIVES THE RAILCATS A 6-4 VICTORY

 

JOLIET, IL-The Gary SouthShore RailCats (15-17) scored five runs in the seventh inning to erase a 3-1 Joliet JackHammers (15-17) lead and win 6-4 against the JackHammers before 4,037 fans at Silver Cross Field on Friday night.

 

The JackHammers scored their first run of the game in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Juan Diaz (2-4). He took a two-out pitch from RailCats right-hander Jason Shelley (5-4), who retired the first 11 batters he faced, and smacked his 21st home run of the season. The JackHammers took an early 1-0 lead.

 

The JackHammers pushed across two runs in the fifth inning to make it 3-0. Derek Nicholson (1-3) led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a groundout by Jake Whitesides (0-4). An error by David Detienne, the RailCats first baseman, allowed him to move to third base. Dennis Blackmon (2-4) hit an RBI single to score Nicholson and make it 2-0 in favor of the JackHammers.

 

Chris Brown (0-3) worked a walk to move Blackmon to second base and Eric Scriven (0-4) reached base on a fielder’s choice to push Blackmon to third. Cory Harris (1-4) hit an RBI single to score Blackmon and make it 3-0 in favor of the JackHammers.

 

The RailCats scored their first run of the game in the sixth inning when Tanner Townsend (1-4) laced an RBI double to score Eric Blakely (2-5). The RailCats were within two runs at 3-1.

 

Gary scored five runs in the seventh inning to take a 6-3 lead. Jermaine Allensworth (2-4) led off the inning with a single and went to third base on a double by David Detienne (1-2).

 

Nate Price (1-3) hit an RBI single to score Allensworth and Detienne and tie the game at 3-3.

 

The RailCats scored three more runs in the in the inning to take a 6-3. Josh Regits (1-2) suffered the loss for the JackHammers, pitching six innings and allowing four runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out five.

 

Loose Gravel: Dennis Blackmon threw out two RailCats baserunners on Friday. He threw out Eric McNamee trying to steal second base in the first inning and retired Steve Haake trying to steal second base to end the fourth inning. Blackmon finished 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

 

The JackHammers take on the Gary SouthShore RailCats in a doubleheader on Saturday. The JackHammers and RailCats will resume a suspended game from August 5 in a 0-0 tie in the top of the fifth inning at 6:05 p.m. The JackHammers will play the remaining four innings of game one and after a thirty-minute break will battle the RailCats in a seven-inning contest in game two. James Garcia (0-1, 5.84) takes on a yet-to-be determined starter in game one of the doubleheader. Travis Kerber (6-5, 4.46) will take the hill for the RailCats against Nate Sevier (10-3, 5.20) for the JackHammers in the nightcap.
