“BIG PAPPA” GIVES THE JACKHAMMERS A WALK-OFF WIN

JOLIET, IL-Joliet JackHammers (19-25) designated hitter Juan Diaz (2-5) hit his Northern League leading 24^th and 25^th home runs of the season including a game-winning solo home run in the 10^th inning to give the JackHammers a 5-4 win over the Schaumburg Flyers (19-25) before 2,109 fans at Silver Cross Field on Wednesday night.

The JackHammers jumped out to the early lead with two runs in the first inning against Schaumburg pitcher Dan Grybash. Cory Harris (3-5) and Tim Hutting (1-5) reached base on singles. Each runner advanced one base into scoring position. Derek Nicholson (0-3) worked a walk to load the bases.

Jake Whitesides (2-4) hit an RBI single to score Harris and make it 1-0. Hutting scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 in favor of the JackHammers.

The Flyers scored four runs in the second inning to overtake the JackHammers for the lead. Pat O’Sullivan (3-4) singled off of JackHammers starting pitcher James Garcia and scored on a double by Dario Delgado (2-4). Christian Snavely (0-2) came up to the plate and continued the inning with a walk before Alex Fonseca (1-4) hit a three-run home run over the left field wall. The Flyers took a 4-2 lead.

The JackHammers scored a run in the eighth inning on a solo home run by Diaz. It was a line-drive home run over the left field wall and the JackHammers came within one run at 4-3.

Joliet tied the game with a single run in the ninth inning. Chris Brown (2-4) led off the inning with a single and stole second base. Matt Mazurek (1-3) grounded out to move Brown to third base. Harris hit an RBI single to make it 4-4.

The JackHammers and Flyers played into the tenth inning. Joliet left-hander Jason Cierlik (1-0) retired the Flyers in order and Diaz came up to the plate to lead off the 10^th inning. He pummeled the second pitch that he saw from Flyers right-hander Randy Dunnett (0-1) over the left field wall for the game-winning hit.

Loose Gravel: Diaz recorded his second multi home run game of the 2007 season on Wednesday. Diaz hit two home runs against the Gary SouthShore RailCats on August 4 at Silver Cross Field.

On Thursday night, the JackHammers and Flyers play game two of their five-game series at Silver Cross Field. Billy Keppinger (5-7, 4.10) will make the start for Schaumburg against Matt Smith (5-8, 5.32) for Joliet.
