Joliet, Ill.—Jose Yepez collected four hits including a home run and drove in four runs to lead the Gary SouthShore RailCats to a come-from-behind 10-5 victory over the Joliet JackHammers in the first game of the second half for both clubs.  

 

The RailCats trailed 5-1 and had totaled just three hits against Joliet starting pitcher Brian Forystek through the first six innings.  But they began the seventh with three consecutive singles from Yepez, Tanner Townsend, and Jermaine Allensworth.  Aaron Williams replaced Forystek and issued a pair of bases loaded walks before retiring the side as the RailCats pulled to within two runs at 5-3.

 

In the eighth, Steve Haake reached on an error by second baseman Chris Brown to start the inning.  The RailCats then collected four consecutive RBI doubles producing four runs to take a 7-5 lead.  Yepez, Townsend, Allensworth, and pinch hitter Nate Price each contributed a two-base hit to bring in a run.  Price scored later in the inning on a run-scoring single by David Detienne to make it a five-run inning and give the RailCats an 8-5 lead.  

 

Gary added two more in the ninth on a Yepez double down the left field line to bring in Jay Pecci and Haake, who had both singled earlier in the inning, to make it 10-5.

 

Steve Obenchain worked two and one-third hitless, scoreless innings of relief to earn the win and improve to 2-1.  Williams (2-3) was charged with three runs in an inning of work to take the loss.

 

Chad Ehrnsberger hit a pair of two-run home runs early in the game for Joliet, sandwiched around a solo homer by Yepez in the second, as Joliet built a 5-1 lead.

 

The RailCats will meet the JackHammers on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Silver Cross Field.  Travis Kerber (1-1, 5.34) will start for Gary against Joliet's Matt Smith (2-4, 5.22).  The RailCats return home on Monday night to open a seven game homestand through Sunday, July 22^nd.

 

Notes:  Townsend extended his hitting streak to eight straight games…The RailCats are 27-6 when they score at least four runs in a game…The RailCats have come from behind in 17 of their 31 wins on the season…The RailCats played errorless baseball for the 16^th time in the last 22 games.
