VROD DELIVERS IN 11TH INNING, BEARS BEAT SHARKS 5-4

NEWARK, NJJuly 24, 2007 – With two outs in the top of the 11th inning, Newark Bears first baseman Victor Rodriguez hit a single up the middle to score center-fielder Keith Reed from second base to defeat the Camden Riversharks 5-4 Tuesday afternoon at Campbell’s Field.  With the win, the Bears have improved their second half record to 6-6, and won the past two games to win the three-game series over Camden.

The Bears jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when shortstop Donaldo Mendez belted an 0-2 pitch for his first home run of the season, however the Riversharks came back with two runs in the bottom of the first when left-fielder Denny Abreu hit an RBI ground rule double, and catcher Randy McGarvey hit an RBI single to give Camden a 2-1 advantage.  Third baseman Craig Paquette added to the Rivershark lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning.

With the Bears trailing 3-1 in the top of the fourth inning, Rodriguez hit an RBI single and right-fielder Jose Herrera hit a two-run home run for his fifth of the season on a 0-2 pitch, to put Newark ahead 4-3.  Camden tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single by McGarvey.

For the Bears, Mendez went 2-for-5 with a home run and a single, Reed went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a stolen base, and Rodriguez went 2-for-5 with two RBI.  For the Riversharks, McGarvey and Abreu each had three hits.

Jason DiAngelo (2-6) earned the victory tossing two scoreless innings allowing only one hit while striking out one and Ramon Linares (2-1) took the loss surrendering one run on two hits in one inning.  Newly acquired Harold Eckert picked up a no-decision in his Bears debut allowing four runs on seven hits striking out seven in six innings pitched.

The Bears will return to Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium for six-games in five days beginning Wednesday evening against the Road Warriors.  First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
