In the top of the first inning, Eric Blakeley singled to center with one out and Jay Pecci walked. One batter later, Jose Yepez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Townsend ran the count to 3-2 before drilling a line drive that sailed over the left field fence for the eighth grand slam home run in RailCats history to make it 4-0.
Habel (9-3) shut down the JackHammers into the eighth inning, working seven and two-thirds, allowing six hits and one unearned run with no walks and four strikeouts. He allowed a runner to reach second base in the second but did not allow another man past first until Cory Harris doubled leading off the eighth. He kept the JackHammers from getting the tying run to the plate after the first inning.
David Byard recorded the final out in the eighth inning and Tony Cogan came on to pitch a scoreless ninth for his league-leading 13th save.
Habel has won his last seven starts and has allowed two runs or less in five of the seven.
The RailCats matched their season-low with just four hits including only two after the first inning. Mike Reese reached base in all four plate appearances with a single and three walks.
The grand slam homer was the second of Townsend's RailCats career, making him the only player in club history with more than one grand slam.
The RailCats return home to host the Schaumburg Flyers on Monday at 7:00 p.m. at U. S. Steel Yard in the opener to a four game series and start to a seven game homestand. Jason Shelley (1-1, 8.88) will start for
