SIX BEARS SELECTED TO PLAY IN ATLANTIC LEAGUE ALL-STAR GAME IN LANCASTER

 

NEWARK, NJ – July 5, 2007 – Right-handed pitchers Bobby Brownlie and Gary Knotts, second baseman Javier Colina, catcher John Pachot, outfielder Keith Reed, and first baseman Victor Rodriguez and have been chosen to represent the Newark Bears and play for the North Division in the 2007 Atlantic League All-Star Game presented by Faulkner Chevrolet/Suzuki Wednesday, July 11 at Clipper Magazine Stadium in Lancaster, PA.  The game will begin at 7:05 PM.

 

Brownlie, who will be making his first AL All-Star appearance, has started 11 games this season posting a 6-3 record with a 3.44 ERA.  In 70.2 innings pitched, the New Jersey native and former standout at Rutgers University has 61 strikeouts, which ranks third in the Atlantic League.  Brownlie has been the starting pitcher in two of the Bears seven shutouts this season, including a 7-0 victory over the Road Warriors on June 19 where Brownlie set a season high with 10 strikeouts.

 

Knotts will be making his first AL All-Star appearance after making 12 starts this season for the Bears posting a 4-5 record.  The former major leaguer ranks first in the league with 65 strikeouts and 78.2 innings pitched, and second with a 2.97 ERA.

 

Colina has appeared in 57 games for the Bears this season batting .336 with a team leading 46 runs scored, 76 hits, three triples, 15 home runs, and 49 RBI.  He ranks second in the league in hits, third in home runs and extra-base hits with 31, fourth in RBI and slugging percentage at .619, fifth in runs scored, and sixth in batting average.  This game marks Colina’s first AL All-Star appearance.

 

Pachot will be making his second AL All-Star appearance after representing the Camden Riversharks in 2006.  The 2006 AL Catcher of the Year has appeared in 44 games behind the plate for the Bears this season being the backstop for five of the Bears seven shutouts. 

 

Reed, also making his first AL All-Star appearance, has appeared in 56 games with the Bears this season playing 41 of those games in centerfield.  The former Baltimore Oriole outfielder is batting .277 with 45 runs scored, 11 doubles, ten home runs, and 37 RBI.  From June 7 through June 22, Reed put together a team high 16-game hitting streak.  During that stretch, Reed batted .358 with six multi-hit games and ten extra-base hits.

 

Rodriguez will be making his second AL All-Star appearance having appeared in the game in 2004.  This season the 2004 Atlantic League Most Valuable Player has played in 56 games for the Bears batting .344 with 27 runs scored, 21 extra-base hits, including 14 doubles and 41 RBI.  He ranks third in the AL in batting average and hits with 74.
