Gary, Ind.—Jose Yepez's three-run home run highlighted a seven run third inning and Jason Shelley returned from the inactive list to pitch five impressive innings as the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the Schaumburg Flyers 11-3 before a crowd of 1,886 at U. S. Steel Yard on Monday night.  The RailCats have started the second half by winning four of their first five games.  Schaumburg falls to 2-3.

Shelley, who finished second in the Northern League in wins and first in strikeouts in 2006, had battled a hamstring problem over six starts in May and early June this season, posting a 1-1 record with an unimpressive 8.88 earned run average before being placed on the inactive list to rehabilitate the injury.  He returned to the mound for the first time since June 12th and faced just one batter over the minimum for the first three innings.  He earned the win by going five, allowing five hits, one run, with one walk and no strikeouts.

The RailCats scored twice in the second inning to take the lead against Flyers starter Drew Dickinson (6-5).  Tanner Townsend and Jermaine Allensworth had back-to-back doubles with one out to bring in one run, and Allensworth eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0.

In the third, Eric Blakeley led off the inning with a single to left and Jay Pecci walked.  Steve Haake followed with a single to right to bring in Blakeley, and Yepez followed with a home run to left, his fifth of the season, to make it 6-0.  Townsend followed with a walk and Allensworth singled him to second.  One batter later, Mike Reese laced a two-run double to center to make it 8-0, and Reese scored on David Detienne's double down the right field line to make it 9-0.

Billy Malone, Kyle Leon, and Sandy Almonte each contributed run-scoring hits for the Flyers over the middle innings, but Schaumburg could never get back within striking distance before the RailCats scored two more runs in the eighth to close out the scoring.

The RailCats finished with 11 hits.  Allensworth went 3 for 4 and Yepez finished with four runs batted in to lead the way as the RailCats defeated the Flyers for the ninth time in 10 meetings this season.

The RailCats host Schaumburg on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at U. S. Steel Yard in the second game of the four game set. Travis Kerber (1-3, 5.20) will start for Gary against Schaumburg's Dan Grybash (5-2, 3.80).  The series will also feature the final weekday matinee on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m.

Notes:  The game was delayed at the start by 33 minutes due to rain…Townsend extended his hitting streak to 12 straight games, the longest of the year by a Gary player…The RailCats are 30-6 when they score at least four runs in a game.
