ROAD WARRIORS COMEBACK, DEFEAT BEARS 9-5
NEWARK, NJ – July 25, 2007 – Trailing 5-4 in the top of the sixth inning, Road Warriors second baseman David Housel hit an RBI double to tie the game, and designated hitter Ian Bladergroen hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the seventh for the go-ahead run to defeat the Newark Bears 9-5 in front of 3,583 fans Wednesday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Bears built a 4-1 lead with in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI infield single by designated hitter Javier Colina and a three-run home run by first baseman Victor Rodriguez for his seventh of the season. Shortstop Ramon Castro’s third home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning gave Newark the 5-3 advantage. Castro ended the day 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI, and second baseman Victor Gutierrez and right-fielder Jose Herrera each added two hits. Catcher John Pachot finished the game 1-for-3 to extend his season-high hitting streak to 12 games.
For the Road Warriors, catcher Manny Mejia went 3-for-3 with two singles, a double, a sacrifice-fly, three runs scored, and three RBI. Housel and Bladergroen each had one hit with one run scored, and one RBI.
Brendon Davis (0-2) took the loss after allowing two runs on two hits in two innings of relief, while Darwin Soto (3-3) earned the victory surrendering five runs on 12 hits in 6.2 innings pitched. Trevor Marcotte picked up his first save of the season throwing 2.1 perfect innings striking out one.
The Bears and Road Warriors will continue the three-game series with game two at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium Thursday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 AM. Gary Knotts (6-5) will take the mound for the Bears against Carlos Castillo (6-6). Gates open at 10:05 AM to Camp Day at The Den.
