Gary, Ind.—Mike Reese's bloop single with two outs in the bottom of the 13^th inning brought in Dale Mueller from third base with the winning run as the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 5-4 on Sunday afternoon before a crowd of 5,341 at U. S. Steel Yard. The game marked the final game of the first half for both clubs. Gary finished the half with a 30-18 record while Fargo-Moorhead finished 26-21.

Mueller led off the Gary half of the thirteenth with an infield single and stole second. He went to third base on David Detienne's long fly ball to center field. After back-to-back intentional walks to Eric McNamee and Jay Pecci, Tanner Townsend popped out to short for the second out. Reese then lifted a 2-2 pitch to shallow right. F-M right fielder Tydus Meadows seemed to lose the ball in the sun momentarily, then came charging in but get not get to the ball before it landed as Mueller scored to end the game.

The game featured four home runs. Reese hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning for Gary while Mike Just connected on a two-run shot in the third, Darryl Lawhorn hit a solo homer in the fifth, and Meadows drilled a solo shot in the sixth for Fargo-Moorhead.

Gary took a 2-0 lead in the first. Detienne singled to start the inning and went to second on McNamee's sacrifice bunt. Jay Pecci walked and Tanner Townsend singled to right to load the bases. Reese delivered a sacrifice fly to bring in Detienne, and Steve Haake followed with a hit to right to drive in Pecci and give the RailCats a two-run lead.

Just's two-run homer tied the game in the thid and Lawhorn's homer gave the RedHawks a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, McNamee and Reese homered to give Gary a 4-3 lead before Meadows tied the game with a home run in the sixth.

The RailCats bullpen combined to pitch six scoreless innings including one by David Byard, two by Chad Blackwell and Steve Obenchain, and one by Steve Edsall. Edsall earned the win (1-0) by working the top of the 13^th.

The RailCats sidestepped a problem in the top of the 10^th when Adam Shorsher led off the inning with a double for the RedHawks and went to third on Casey Haugen's sacrifice. With one out, Kory Wayment hit a fly ball to left that was caught by Nate Price, who made a perfect throw home to nail the tagging Shorsher for an inning-ending double play.

Haake had four hits to lead a 14 hit RailCats attack. Reese drove in four runs.

The RailCats will take three days off for the Northern League All-Star break. They will open the second half at Joliet on Thursday in an 11:05 a.m. game.
