Winnipeg, Manitoba—Jose Yepez tied a Northern League record with four doubles and the Gary SouthShore RailCats set a club record with seven stolen bases as they defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 8-6 on Monday night before a crowd of 5,829 in Winnipeg. The win was the first at CanWest Global Park for the RailCats since August 28, 2003, ending a string of 14 straight losses in Winnipeg for the RailCats.
The RailCats jumped out to a 7-1 lead, but had to withstand a furious rally by the Goldeyes, who scored five runs in the fifth inning to make it a 7-6 game. But three RailCats pitchers shutdown the Goldeyes over the final four innings without allowing a man to reach base.
The RailCats took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. Jay Pecci set the tone for the night when he singled and stole second and third before scoring on Jermaine Allensworth's single to make it 1-0. Allenworth also stole third later in the inning and scored on Yepez's second double of the game to make it 2-0. Steve Haake scored on a Tanner Townsend ground out to make it 3-0.
The Goldeyes scored once against RailCats starter Josh Habel in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1, but the RailCats answered with two in the fourth. Nate Price doubled and after a pair of walks, scored on Allensworth's ground out. Another run scored the game's only error. In the top of the fifth, Yepez led off with a double, stole third for his first stolen base of the season, and after a walk and stolen base by David Detienne, Dale Mueller singled to right to drive in both runners and make it 7-1.
Winnipeg rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fifth, getting back-to-back home runs by Fehlandt Lentini and Anton French to cap the scoring and make it 7-6. But Habel responded by pitching a perfect sixth inning and Steve Obenchain replaced him with a perfect seventh.
Yepez connected on a two-out double in the top of the eighth to bring in Haake from second and make it 8-6, and Obenchain worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth before Tony Cogan came on to pitch a perfect ninth for his league-leading 11th save.
Habel took over the league lead in wins, improving his record to 7-3. He allowed six runs on nine hits over six innings with no walks and three strikeouts. Six of the hits and five of the runs came in the fifth inning.
The RailCats broke a club record with their 28th win of the half. They won 27 games in both halves in 2005.
The RailCats will play at Winnipeg on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. Jim Pacuch (3-3, 5.28) will start for Gary against Winnipeg's Mike Kusiewicz (0-1, 3.00). They RailCats return home on Wednesday, July 4th to host Fargo-Moorhead in the start to a five game set that will conclude the first half in the Northern League's split-season format. A fireworks spectacular will follow the game Wednesday, sponsored by Krazy Kaplans and the Times of Northwest Indiana.
Notes: The RailCats are 7-6 on their 14 game road trip that concludes Tuesday…The win snapped a three game losing streak for the RailCats…Winnipeg was involved in a baseball rarity when they played the full nine innings without stranding a base runner.
