Gary, Ind.—The Gary SouthShore RailCats Professional Baseball Club announced today that outfielder Guye Senjem has been signed as a free agent. The RailCats also placed outfielder Mike Reese on the seven day disabled list.
Senjem was selected to the Can-Am League's full-season all-star team last season as the league's top designated hitter with Brockton. He finished tied for second in the league in home runs (14), fourth in runs batted in (55) and ninth in batting average (.289). He also finished fifth in total bases.
This season, Senjem had struggled with Brockton, batting .203 with two home runs and 18 RBI in 40 games. RailCats manager Greg Tagert is hoping Senjem can find his form of 2006 and noted that despite his low numbers in 2007, Senjem had struck out just 20 times in 148 at bats, providing reason for optimism.
Senjem, 32, is a product of Iowa State University and a native of Kenyon, Minnesota. He is in his 11th year of professional baseball. He reached the Double-A level with the Cincinnati Reds in 2003 and '04. Senjem has spent all or part of four seasons in the Northern League with St. Paul.
Reese will be eligible to return to the active roster next Friday, August 3rd. He has played in 42 games with the RailCats this season, batting .276 with two home runs and 20 RBI. He has started 33 of the club's 62 games, primarily at the designated hitter position.
The RailCats roster remains at the Northern League limit of 22 players.
The RailCats are home tonight (Friday), Saturday, and Sunday against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at U. S. Steel Yard. For tickets, call (219) 882-BALL (2255).
