Gary, Ind.—Joe Mathis hit two home runs and drove in five runs and Gerrit Simpson allowed only one unearned run over seven and two-thirds innings as the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks defeated the Gary SouthShore RailCats 9-2 on Sunday afternoon.  A crowd of 2,357 saw the RedHawks complete a sweep of the three game series at U. S. Steel Yard.

 

Mathis connected on his first home run on the first swing of the game, drilled a pitch from RailCats starter Jason Shelley into the right field bleachers leading off the top of the first inning.  In the second inning, Mathis followed a pair of singles by Adam Shorsher and Mike Just with a two-out, three-run home run to right to give F-M a 4-0 lead.  The RedHawks tacked on two more in the third inning on run-scoring singles by Ruben Salazar and Billy Munoz to make it 6-0.

 

Gary had a chance to get back to within striking distance in the fifth.  Jay Pecci reached on an error with one out and went to second on Eric Blakeley's two-out single.  Guye Senjem followed with a base hit to center, driving in Pecci to make it 6-1.  Nate Price walked to load the bases, but Simpson got Brett Wallace to fly to right to end the threat and the RailCats did not advance another past first base until the eighth inning.

 

Fargo-Moorhead scored three runs in the eighth inning off RailCats reliever Steve Obenchain to put the game out of reach at 9-1.  The RailCats scored an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth to close out the scoring.

 

Simpson (4-5) allowed just four hits and one unearned run with two walks and no strikeouts to pick up the win.  Shelley (3-2) took the loss, allowing nine hits and six runs in four and two-thirds innings with two walks and six strikeouts.

 

The RailCats collected just four hits after being limited to two on Saturday.  They scored just four runs in the three game series and have lost five of their last six games.  The RailCats dropped under .500 at 8-9.  It is the first time they have been below the .500 mark in either half this season.  Fargo-Moorhead improved their second half record to 13-4.

 

The RailCats are off on Monday.  They will host Winnipeg at U. S. Steel Yard at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday in the first game of a three game set.  Travis Kerber (3-4, 4.10) will start for Gary against the Goldyes' Ben Moore (6-4, 4.46).  The series includes a visit by the famous San Diego Chicken on Thursday night, sponsored by Harris Bank.
