Gary took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Dave Detienne, who finished with four hits, tripled off the center field fence and scored on Eric McNamee's single. After a double by Jay Pecci, McNamee scored on Tanner Townsend's sacrifice fly to give the RailCats an early two run lead.
Fargo-Moorhead got on the board in the fifth to take the lead. RailCats starting pitcher Jim Paduch (3-5) walked two batters before allowing a run-scoring single to Casey Haugen to make it 2-1, and Kory Wayment followed with a two-run double to make it 3-2.
The RedHawks added single runs in the sixth and seventh against RailCats reliever Joe Panozzo to take a 5-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the RailCats put together a rally that was cut short by a baserunning mistake. Eric McNamee singled to center to start the inning and with one out, Tanner Townsend singled to left. Jose Yepez followed with a hit to right to bring in McNamee and move Townsend to third. But Townsend took a wide turn around the bag and when the throw from right fielder Tydus Meadows came in behind him, he was tagged out by third baseman Ruben Salazar before he could get back to third base for the second out of the inning. Steve Haake followed with a hit to right to move Yepez to third, but Jermaine Allensworth flied out to right to end the inning.
The RailCats did not advance a runner past first base the rest of the way, getting two hits in the eighth separated by a double play ground out.
Of the RailCats 15 hits, 13 came with the bases empty or with a runner at first, and the club hit into three double plays.
