Gary, Ind.—Sandy Almonte's solo home run in the seventh inning broke a 2-2 tie as the Schaumburg Flyers went on to defeat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 5-2 before a crowd of 1,466 at U. S. Steel Yard on Tuesday night.  The loss dropped the RailCats to 4-2 in the second half while Schaumburg improved to 3-3.

Almonte's home run was the first of three solo shots in three consecutive innings by the Flyers.  Dario Delgado launched a homer to left in the eighth and Kyle Leon drilled on to left-center in the ninth.

The game featured a series of missed opportunities by the RailCats, who had nine base runners in the first four innings but could not score.  They went a combined 2 for 10 with men in scoring position in the game, lined into two double plays, and had three runners thrown out attempting to steal.

Schaumburg took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth when Leon reached on an infield single, stole second, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on Demetrius Heath's bloop single to center.

The RailCats answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Steve Haake and Jose Yepez produced back-to-back run-scoring singles to give Gary a 2-1 lead.

But Schaumburg tied the game in the sixth when Christian Snavely led off with a double and scored on Jimmy Hurst's two-out single off the right field fence to make it a 2-2 game.

Almonte homered with one out in the seventh off RailCats starter Travis Kerber (1-4), and Delgado and Leon each connected off reliever David Byard over the next two innings to close out the scoring.

Schaumburg starter Dan Grybash (6-2) scattered nine hits and four walks over six innings to earn the win.  Brandon Villafuerte worked two scoreless innings to set up closer James Morrison for a perfect ninth as Morrison earned his 10th save.  Kerber allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits in seven innings with two walks and three strikeouts to absorb the loss.

Eric McNamee and Steve Haake each had three hits as part of an 11 hit RailCats attack.

The RailCats host Schaumburg on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at U. S. Steel Yard in the final weekday matinee of the season.  Willie Glen (7-0, 4.14) will try to extend his club record nine game winning streak for Gary against Schaumburg's Billy Keppinger (4-4, 3.98).  The series will conclude on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. before Joliet comes to town to start a three game series Friday.

Notes:  Tanner Townsend extended his hitting streak to 13 straight games, the longest of the year by a Gary player.
