Fargo-Moorhead took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Joe Mathis reached on a bunt single and scored on Kory Wayment's triple. Wayment scored on an RBI ground out off the bat of Tydus Meadows.
The RailCats scored their only runs of the night in the fourth inning when Eric McNamee reached on an infield single and scored on Jay Pecci's double to right. Pecci eventually scored on Jermaine Allensworth's ground out to tie the game at 2-2.
The RedHawks took the lead for good in the sixth, taking advantage of a pair of walks by RailCats starting pitcher Travis Kerber (1-2) followed by a run-scoring single by Ruben Salazar. They added another run in the seventh off reliever Steve Edsall when Darryl Lawhorn and Mike Just started with back-to-back singles and Lawhorn scored from third on Joe Mathis' double play ground out.
The RailCats final chance to score came in the seventh. With two outs, Tanner Townsend and Eric Blakeley each singled to left and Nate Price walked to load the bases. But reliever Jason Schutt replaced Renkert on the mound and got Dale Mueller to ground out to second and end the threat. The RailCats did not put another man on base over the final two innings.
In the eighth, two controversial calls led to the ejection of RailCats manager Greg Tagert. Eric McNamee was called out on strikes on a 3-2 pitch that started the inning that McNamee argued was outside. Then the next batter, Jay Pecci, hit a ground ball to second and raced Schutt to the bag at first on a close play. He was called out by first base umpire Mike Trotter. Tagert raced out to argue the call at first and then was ejected on his way back to the dugout by plate umpire Sal Giaco after Tagert drew a line beyond the outside corner of the plate to simulate where he thought the final pitch to McNamee had passed.
The RailCats host Fargo-Moorhead again Thursday in the second game of the five game set. Willie Glen (6-0, 3.90) will pitch for
