Gary, Ind.—Jay Pecci collected four hits and drove in five runs and David Detienne hit his first home run since 2002 as the Gary SouthShore RailCats snapped a three game losing streak and defeated the Joliet JackHammers 11-3 on Friday night before a crowd of 5,104 at U. S. Steel Yard.  

 

The win improved the RailCats second half record to 5-4.  They are tied with Schaumburg for first place in the South Division of the Northern League.  Joliet fell to 4-5.

 

Detienne connected on a lead-off home run in the first inning to give Gary a 1-0 lead.  The RailCats, who did not play professionally in 2005 or 2006, had last hit a home run in 2002 while playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers Advance-A affiliate at Vero Beach of the Florida State League.

 

In the third, Detienne doubled off the left field fence and scored one batter later when Pecci singled hard up the middle to make it 2-0.

 

Gary broke the game open in the fourth.  Joliet starter Nick Renault (5-6) issued four walks in the inning including one with the bases loaded to Detienne to force in a run and make it 3-0.  With one out, Pecci lifted a triple down the left field line that alluded the diving left fielder Kevin Sullivan as three runs scored to make it 6-0.

 

RailCats starting pitcher Jason Shelley (3-1) allowed only one base runner over the first five innings.  In the sixth, Anthony Monegan singled with one out for Joliet to break up a string of 13 straight batters retired.  After two more singles to load the bases, Chad Ehrnsberger singled in two runs to make it 6-2. 

 

But the RailCats put the game away in the seventh, scoring five runs.  Nate Price had a two-run single, Pecci added an RBI double, and Joliet pitchers again walked four in the inning.

 

Pecci finished the 4 for 5 with two singles, a double, and a triple and his five RBI established a 2007 RailCats team high.

 

Shelley earned the win with six strong innings, allowing five hits, two runs, with no walks and three strikeouts.

 

The RailCats host Joliet again on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at U. S. Steel Yard in the second game of a three game series.  Travis Kerber (1-4, 4.78) will start for Gary against Joliet's Raymond Jenkins (2-5, 5.19).  The first 1,000 kids through the gates will receive a free RailCats bat, sponsored by the Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana Chevy Dealers.

 

Notes:  Joliet pitchers walked 12 in the game and struck out only three…The RailCats have won nine of 11 games against Joliet in 2007.
