PATRIOTS HOME RUNS TOO MUCH FOR BEARS

 

NEWARK, NJ – July 14, 2007 – The Somerset Patriots hit three home runs to defeat the Newark Bears 7-2 Saturday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.  Despite the loss, the Bears hit four doubles including two by shortstop Pat Peavey and a team-leading 22nd by third baseman Corey Smith.

 

With the Patriots ahead 2-0, Somerset right-fielder Elliot Ayala and shortstop Teuris Olivares each hit solo home runs in the top of the third inning.  It was Ayala’s second of the season and Olivares’ fifth.

 

The score remained 4-0 until Patriots third baseman Pat Boran hit a three-run home run, his first of the season, in the top of the fourth to give Somerset a 7-0 advantage.  Boran ended the game 1-for-4 with three RBI, while Ayala ended 2-for-5 with a run scored and RBI.

 

The Bears scored their runs in the bottom of the ninth inning when right-fielder Joe Jiannetti hit a sacrifice-fly to score first baseman Victor Rodriguez, and catcher John Pachot singled in Smith.  Pachot and Peavey each ended with two hits to lead the Bears offense.

 

Bobby Brownlie (7-4) took the loss after allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits striking out five in six innings and Sam Marsonek (3-4) earned the victory throwing six scoreless innings surrendering five hits.

 

The Bears and Patriots will complete the three game series Sunday afternoon at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 3:05 PMMatt Kimbell (0-0) will make his first professional start for the Bears while Brian Adams (9-1) will take the mound for the Patriots.  Gates open at 2:05 PM to ET 25th Anniversary Celebration and a team photo giveaway presented by Sir Speedy of Newark.  Receive FREE admission at the box office when you present any “Extra Terrestrial’ item.  In addition, it will also be Family Fun Day Sunday at The Den featuring a pre-game team autograph session and a post-game kids run the bases.
