PATRIOTS BELT FIVE HOME RUNS, DEFEAT BEARS 10-6
NEWARK, NJ – July 13, 2007 – The Somerset Patriots hit five home runs including a solo home run and a two-run home run by center fielder Mike Lockwood to defeat the Newark Bears 10-6 in front of 4,006 fans Friday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
With the Bears already ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the third inning, designated hitter Jose Herrera hit an RBI single and right-fielder Joe Jiannetti hit a sacrifice fly to give the Bears a 5-2 advantage.
After designated hitter Jim Belcher hit his first home run of the season, to cut the lead to 5-3 in the top of the fourth, Lockwood hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to tie the game at five. With the Patriots ahead 7-6 in the top of the seventh, Lockwood added his 14th of the season to put Somerset ahead 8-6. Lockwood ended the day 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI.
For the Bears Herrera finished the game 3-for-4 including three singles, an RBI, and a run scored, while left-fielder Joey Gomes went 1-for-4 with two runs scored. Shortstop Teuris Olivares led the Patriots offense going 3-for-5 including a solo home run, his fourth of the season, two runs scored, and two RBI.
Carlos Mirabal (6-4) took the loss allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits while striking out six in six complete innings. Andy Van Hekken (8-3) earned the victory surrendering six runs, two earned, on seven hits in six innings.
The Bears and Patriots will continue the three-game series with game two Saturday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM. Bobby Brownlie (7-3) will take the mound for the Bears against Sam Marsonek (2-4) for the Patriots. Gates open at 5:05 PM to Italian/American Heritage Night at The Den featuring festival foods on the concourse and an Italian Sausage eating contest presented by Premio Sausage. All fans will receive FREE admission at the box office when you present an Italian Flag or wear Italian apparel.
