NETTLES SETS NEW BEARS FRANCHISE RECORD WITH FOUR STOLEN BASES IN A GAME
NEWARK, NJ – July 20, 2007 – Newark Bears outfielder Marcus Nettles stole four bases in the win against the Bridgeport Bluefish Thursday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium to set a new franchise record for stolen bases in a game. With those stolen bases, Nettles added to his team-leading 25 and currently ranks second in the Atlantic League.
In the bottom of the third inning, with the Bears ahead 1-0, Nettles reached first base on a fielder’s choice. With shortstop Ramon Castro at the plate, Nettles stole second base and would later steal third base for his first two of the evening.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, with the game tied at one, Nettles led off the inning with a single up the middle. He would steal second base to tie the Bears franchise record, and steal third base for his fourth of the game, passing future Hall-of-Famer and former Newark Bear Rickey Henderson among others who previously held the record of three in a game. It was last done by Henderson on September 11, 2004 against the Bluefish at The Den. Two batters later, Nettles scored on a single by designated hitter Keith Reed for the Bears second run of the game in which they won 4-1.
Originally drafted in the 11th round of the 2001 draft by the San Diego Padres, Nettles has reached the double-A level. Since 2001, the former Miami Hurricane has led his respective league in stolen bases three times including a career high 58 in 2002 with Lake Elsinore of the single-A California League.
