MIRABAL THROWS COMPLETE GAME, BEARS WIN 4-0
NEWARK, NJ – July 23, 2007 – Carlos Mirabal (8-4) tossed a complete game shutout allowing only six hits while striking out four as the Newark Bears defeated the Camden Riversharks 4-0 Monday evening at Campbell’s Field.
Left-fielder Marcus Nettles scored the first run of the ballgame in the top of the first inning when center-fielder Keith Reed grounded into a double play. With the Bears ahead 2-0 in the top of the fifth inning, Reed and second baseman Javier Colina each had RBI singles to give Newark the 4-0 advantage.
Nettles finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and a stolen base, while Reed ended the night 1-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI, and a stolen base.
Former Bear Tim Cain (2-3) took the loss after surrendering four runs, three earned, on six hits in five innings pitched.
The Bears and Riversharks will play the rubber game of the three-game series Tuesday afternoon at Campbell’s Field with first pitch scheduled for 11:05 AM. Newly acquired right-hander, and Edison, NJ native Harold Eckert (0-0) will make the start for the Bears.
