KNOTTS PITCHES BEARS TO VICTORY IN FRONT OF SECOND ALL-TIME LARGEST CROWD AT THE DEN
NEWARK, NJ – July 26, 2007 – Gary Knotts (7-5) allowed only two runs on six hits in seven innings while striking out nine batters as the Newark Bears defeated the Road Warriors 4-2 Thursday afternoon at in front of 6,643 fans at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. The crowd became the second all-time largest crowd at the stadium since it’s opening in 1999, passing a crowd of 6,601 set on May 11, 2001.
Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, right-fielder Keith Reed hit a sacrifice-fly with bases loaded, and first baseman Victor Rodriguez followed with a two-run double giving the Bears a 3-2 lead. Catcher Jason Torres hit an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to put Newark ahead 4-2.
For the Bears, Rodriguez finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Torres went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. For the Road Warriors, first baseman Ian Bladergroen finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the top of the first inning, and center-fielder Estee Harris went 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning.
Former Bear Carlos Castillo (6-7) took the loss after surrendering four runs on ten hits in 5.1 innings pitched and Jason DiAngelo picked up his ninth save of the season pitching two perfect innings with three strikeouts.
The Bears and Road Warriors will play the rubber match Friday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Delvis Pacheco (3-1) will take the mound for the Bears against Randy Dicken (0-5) for the Road Warriors. Gates open at 6:05 PM to Weird NJ Night featuring a post-game fireworks spectacular. All fans who present a Weird NJ book or wear Weird NJ apparel will receive FREE admission at the box office.
