KNOTTS PITCHES BEARS PAST BLUEFISH; KRENCHICKI EARNS 600TH ATLANTIC LEAGUE VICTORY

NEWARK, NJ – July 21, 2007 – Newark Bears starter Gary Knotts (6-5) tossed seven innings allowing one run on five hits while striking out five and first baseman Victor Rodriguez drove in two runs to defeat the Bridgeport Bluefish 5-3 in front of 3,214 fans Saturday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.  With the win, Manager Wayne Krenchicki became just the second manager in the ten-year history of the Atlantic League with 600 league victories.

The Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with an RBI single by designated hitter Javier Colina in the bottom of the first inning, an RBI triple by second baseman Vic Gutierrez in the bottom of the second inning, and a sacrifice-fly by Rodriguez.

Leading 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, right-fielder Keith Reed and Rodriguez each hit an RBI single to give Newark the 5-1 advantage.  Reed ended the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Colina ended the day 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 15 games, while catcher John Pachot went 1-for-4 extending his to 10 games.

For the Bluefish, first baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke went 2-for-3 including a solo home run, his 17th of the season, in the top of the sixth, and shortstop Nick Ortiz went 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the top of the eighth.

Bluefish starter Jason Sturge (6-5) took the loss surrendering four runs on six hits striking out six in 6.1 innings pitched.

The Bears will travel to Camden to begin a three-game series against the Riversharks on Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 PM.  Delvis Pacheco (3-1) will take the hill for the Bears.
