NEWARK, NJ – July 2, 2007 – Right-handed starter Gary Knotts (4-5) went the distance, allowing three hits, five walks, and striking out four to lead the Newark Bears to a 1-0 victory over the York Revolution on Monday night at Sovereign Bank Stadium.  The complete game shutout was the first by a Bears' pitcher this season.

The lone run of the game came in the top of the third inning on an RBI groundout by right-fielder Jack Headley that scored shortstop Donaldo Mendez.  Mendez, who finished the game 3-for-3, led off the inning with an infield single, stole second base, and advanced to third on an infield single by second baseman Vic Gutierrez.

York's best opportunity came in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, the Revolution loaded the bases, but Knotts induced a pop-up from catcher Luis Taveras to end the inning.

Left-handed starter David Maust (0-2) took the loss for the Revolution.  In seven and two-third innings, he surrendered one run on six hits and no walks, while striking out six.

Shortstop Keoni De Renne went 2-for-4, both singles, to lead the York offense.

The Bears will continue their six game road trip tomorrow night when they travel to Bridgeport to take on the Atlantic League North Division leading Bluefish.  Right-handed pitcher Travis Phelps will take the mound with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM.
