Gary, Ind.—Travis Kerber allowed just one run over eight and one-third innings as the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the Winnipeg Goldeyes 3-1 in the opener of a three game series at U. S. Steel Yard on Tuesday night. A crowd of 1,797 saw the RailCats snap a three game losing streak in a series with the Goldeyes that has been dominated by the home team. The two clubs have met 10 times this season with each club winning five times, but the home team has won eight of 10.

The RailCats collected just four hits in the game, but they bunched three of them together in the first inning to score the only runs they would need to win. With one out, Jay Pecci and Tanner Townsend delivered back-to-back singles, and Steve Haake followed with a hit to right that drove in Pecci and advanced Townsend to third. Jose Yepez followed with a sacrifice fly to right to bring in Townsend and make it 2-0.

In the third inning, the RailCats added one more run. David Detienne walked, stole second, and scored on Townsend's single to center to make it 3-0.

Kerber allowed the Goldeyes only run of the night in the fourth when Chris Latham doubled to right center to start the inning and eventually scored on Antoin Gray's single to left. But Kerber allowed only one other base runner before the ninth inning as he retired 14 of the next 15 hitters.

With one out in the top of the ninth, Kerber walked Latham on a 3-2 pitch, the only walk of the night that Kerber allowed. Tony Cogan replaced Kerber on the mound and walked Walter Young to put the tying run at first. But Cogan got Gray to ground to the mound into a fielder's choice and Brent Metheny flied out to center field to end the game.

Kerber (4-4) allowed only five hits and the one walk while striking out four to earn his third straight win. He has pitched at least eight innings in three straight starts and has allowed three runs or less in five consecutive starts. Cogan picked up his 14^th save by recording the final two outs of the ninth inning. Ben Moore (6-5) took the loss for Winnipeg, allowing four hits and three earned runs over seven and two-thirds innings with four walks and three strikeouts.

The RailCats host Winnipeg at U. S. Steel Yard at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday in the second game of a three game set. Gary's Willie Glen (8-1, 3.59) will start against Winnipeg's Brandon Kintzler (3-0, 3.62). The series concludes with a visit by the famous San Diego Chicken on Thursday night, sponsored by Harris Bank.
