Joliet, Ill.—Steve Haake hit a three-run home run and Jay Pecci added a solo shot as the Gary SouthShore RailCats battled back from an early 4-0 deficit to defeat the Joliet JackHammers 6-4 before a crowd of 4,812 at Silver Cross Field on Saturday night.  The RailCats have won two of three games so far in the series that will conclude Sunday.

 

Joliet scored twice in the first inning, getting a lead-off home run from Cory Harris and a run-scoring single from Kevin Sullivan to take an early lead against RailCats starting pitcher Willie Glen.  They added two more in the second on back-to-back RBI doubles by Tim Hutting and Juan Diaz to go ahead 4-0.

 

But the RailCats exploded for five runs in the third and shutout the JackHammers the rest of the way.  David Detienne led of the inning with a single right and Eric Blakeley followed with a hit to center.  One batter later, Haake drilled a 3-2 pitch off Joliet starter Nate Sevier over the right field fence, his third homer of the year, to make it a 4-3 game.  Jose Yepez followed with a single up the middle and Tanner Townsend drove him in with a triple to the center field fence to tie the game.  Townsend then scored on Jermaine Allensworth's sacrifice fly to cap off the rally and give the RailCats a 5-4 lead.

 

Pecci added a solo homer to right in the fifth, his third of the year, to give Gary a 6-4 lead.

 

Glen settled down after allowing four runs on seven hits over the first two innings.  He left after five innings, allowing nine hits and four runs with one walk and six strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 7-0.  Glen is 27-8 over his three years with the RailCats.

 

Steve Edsall replaced Glen and pitched a perfect sixth inning before Chad Blackwell worked two scoreless frames and Tony Cogan tossed the ninth for his league-leading 12th save.

 

Sevier (7-2) had won seven straight decisions but took the loss for Joliet, allowing six runs on 10 hits in six innings.

 

Yepez had a perfect night at the plate for the RailCats, going 2 for 2 with two walks.  Blakeley and Pecci also had two hits.  Juan Diaz was 4 for 5 for Joliet.

 

The RailCats will meet the JackHammers on Sunday at 5:05 p.m. at Silver Cross Field.  Josh Habel (8-3, 4.08), the league leader in victories and winner of six consecutive starts, will take the mound for Gary against Joliet's Nick Renault (5-4, 4.41).  The RailCats return home on Monday night to open a seven game homestand through Sunday, July 22nd.

 

Notes:  Townsend extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games…The RailCats are 28-6 when they score at least four runs in a game…The RailCats have come from behind in 18 of their 32 wins on the season…The RailCats played errorless baseball for the 17th time in the last 24 games.
