GRIZZLIES SLIP BY MINERS
Eric Beck's pinch hit RBI single with one out in the ninth inning scored Jesse Acosta to lead the Gateway Grizzlies by the Southern Illinois Miners 4-3 Monday night in front of 3,447 at GCS Ballpark.
Acosta doubled to lead off the ninth, and was then sacrificed to third on a bunt from Manny Paula.
The Grizzlies (29-10) are now a franchise-best 19 games over the .500 mark.
The Miners (22-17) went ahead in the first inning with an unearned run off of Grizzlies starter Chris Little. Little went eight innings, allowing three runs, one earned, and did not get a decision. He struck out five.
The Grizzlies would answer with a run in the bottom of the first. Mike Breyman singled to drive in Paula to tie the game at one.
Southern Illinois would again add an unearned run in the second to go up 2-1, but again the Grizzlies would have an answer. Stephen Holdren walked to lead off the bottom of the second. Greg Andrews then homered to right to put the Grizzlies up 3-2.
Former Grizzlie Rob Wirth homered to lead off the sixth inning to knot the score at three. It stayed that way until Beck's walk-off shot.
The Grizzlies and Miners wrap up the short two-game set with a 7:05 p.m. game Tuesday at GCS Ballpark. Jeremy Dow will make his first start of the year for the Grizzlies.
