FREEDOM TAKE GAME TWO FROM GRIZZLIES
The Florence Freedom got three runs in the third inning Wednesday night to go ahead 4-1, they never trailed from that point as they defeated the Gateway Grizzlies 7-3 at Champion Window Field in Florence, Ky.
The Grizzlies (45-16) took an early lead with a run in the first inning. Josh Dietz singled to score Jeff Vincent who had walked.
Ryan Basham tied it for the Freedom (29-29) in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run. Basham added a two-run homer in the third to make it 3-1. The Freedom would add another in the third to make it 4-1.
The Grizzlies got solo home runs by Mike Breyman in the sixth and Charlie Lisk in the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3.
The Grizzlies bullpen struggled in the bottom of the eighth and the Freedom balooned the lead to 7-3. Billy McKinney started the inning. He walked a batter and hit a batter and left with one out in the inning. Newly acquired Brian Logan followed and was ineffective. Logan walked three and gave up a hit. Justin Staatz finished the inning, striking out both hitters he faced.
Manny Paula was the only player with more than a hit. He was 2-4. Dietz, Breyman and Lisk were all 1-3 with the RBI.
The Grizzlies and Freedom will play the "rubber match" of the three-game series Thursday night with a 6:05 CDT at Champion Window Field in Florence, Ky.
