SHARKS CAN’T CATCH FISH, DROP GAME 6-3
Camden, NJ- The Riversharks looked to make it two in a row Saturday night against the Bridgeport Bluefish, but were unable to get past them, dropping game two of the series, 6-3.
Bridgeport got on the board first after Jay Caligiuri scored on a single from catcher John Nathans in the second inning.
Caligiuri would score again in the fourth after Marcos Sanchez drilled a triple to deep left center field. Sanchez would score off a double from Nathans, who later was able to put the ‘Fish up 4-0 after being driven in by new acquisition Vince Blue.
Camden rallied back in the fifth after Matt Demarco was hit by a pitch. Denny Abreu was able to score Demarco after a big double. Pete Shier walked and Abreu was knocked in by a single off of LJ Biernbaum. Dwight Maness stepped up to bat with two men on, but was unable to connect and was later tossed after arguing the call. The Sharks came out of the inning trailing 4-2.
Bridgeport added two more insurance runs in the eighth, with Caligiuri scored his third run of the night and Lou Lucca was driven in off another triple from Sanchez, making the score 6-2.
The Riversharks cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning when Pete Shier scored after Rene Aqueron grounded out to put the score at 6-3, but it would not be enough to help the Sharks gain the lead.
‘Fish starter Mike Porzio (7-4) picked up the win, while the Sharks’ Greg Powell (4-6) earned the loss. Hector Mercado collected the save, his first of the season.
The Southern Division First Half Champion Riversharks (1-1, 40-25) finish their three-game homestand tomorrow evening at a special game time of 5:05pm against the Bluefish (1-1, 36-29).
