COLINA’S TWO-RUN SINGLE IN NINTH SEALS VICTORY
NEWARK, NJ – July 27, 2007 – Newark Bears second baseman Javier Colina hit a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to defeat the Road Warriors 6-5 in front of 3,416 fans Friday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win, the Bears have improved their second half record to 8-7 and overall record to 44-34.
Left-fielder Marcus Nettles and shortstop Ramon Castro led off the bottom of the ninth inning with back-to-back doubles and center-fielder Keith Reed laid a sacrifice bunt down the first base line to move Nettles and Castro. Colina hit a 1-2 pitch into the left-centerfield gap scoring Nettles and Castro to give the Bears the victory.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Nettles led off with a triple and would come around to score on a wild pitch.
The scored remained 1-0 until the Road Warriors scored five runs in the top of the eighth to take a 5-1 lead. Designated hitter Omar Garcia hit an RBI single, left-fielder Jason Bryan hit a sacrifice-fly, and right-fielder Steve Doestch hit a three-run home run for his 12th of the season.
Bears third baseman Corey Smith cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning with a three-run home run of his own, his 12th of the season.
Nettles ended the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and a stolen base, while Colina ended the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. First baseman Victor Rodriguez finished the game 2-for-4 extending his hitting streak to 12 games. Doestch led the Road Warriors going 3-for-4 with a run scored, three RBI, and a stolen base.
Justin Huisman (2-1) picked up the victory tossing 1.2 innings of relief allowing two runs on three hits striking out one while Benito Baez (1-2) took the loss surrendering two runs on three hits in one relief inning. Bears starter Delvis Pacheco lasted 7.1 innings yielding three runs on seven hits striking out five.
The Bears will begin a three-game series in two days against the Lancaster Barnstormers Saturday evening with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 PM. Carlos Mirabal (8-4) will take the mound for the Bears against Gustavo Martinez (4-7) for the Barnstormers. Gates open at 5:05 PM to Salute the Troops Night at The Den. All fans who present an American Flag or all armed forces personnel who wear their uniform at the box office will receive a 2-for-1 ticket deal.
