Calgary Prevents Sweep with 6-4 Win Over T-Bones
Kansas City finishes road trip 3-3 and in first place in the South Division
CALGARY, Alb. – After scoring 29 runs in the first two games of this series, the Kansas City T-Bones offense was held to four runs as the Calgary Vipers prevented the sweep with a 6-4 victory at Foothills Stadium this afternoon.
Kansas City got on the board first when an RBI groundout from Al Benjamin plated Geoff McCallum, who led off the game with a double off Calgary starter Chris Schutt. T-Bones hurler Chris Krawczyk set the Vipers down in order in the first, but surrendered the tying run on an RBI single to Shaun Ashman, scoring Jason Colson who led off the frame with a single. Krawczyk would leave after three innings, surrendering one run on three hits on the day.
Neither team scored again until the fourth inning, when an RBI single from Benjamin scored Mario Delgado to give Kansas City a 2-1 advantage. The T-Bones would add one more in the fifth on an RBI single from Rob Watson, giving them a two-run lead.
Calgary retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth against Dan Jackson, who entered for Krawczyk in the fourth. An RBI double from Drew Miller and a two-run home run from Carlos Duncan gave the Vipers a one run lead heading into the sixth.
Kansas City knotted the game at four in the seventh inning, chasing Colson from the contest with a two-out RBI single from Watson. Ryan Olson entered the game and induced a flyout from Delgado to end the frame. Colson left after allowing four runs on eight hits in six and two-thirds innings of work and did not factor into the decision.
A two-run home run from Miller, off T-Bones reliever Lavon Lewis, gave Calgary the lead back in the bottom of the seventh. Travis Schlichting came in and got the last two outs of the frame, holding the Vipers lead at two. Lewis would suffer the loss having allowed two runs on four hits in one and one-thirds innings of work. Olson finished the game and picked up the victory for Calgary, allowing one hit in two and one-thirds scoreless innings, striking out three of the eight batters he faced. Danny Core allowed one hit in a scoreless eighth inning in relief for Kansas City.
The T-Bones return home Tuesday for a three-game set versus the division-rival Joliet JackHammers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
Game Notes: Today's game marked the first time Kansas City failed to score at least seven runs in a span of four contests.
