BROWNLIE, BEARS CONTINUE TO ROLL PAST BLUEFISH
NEWARK, NJ – July 19, 2007 – Bobby Brownlie (8-4) threw eight innings allowing only one run on four hits while striking out nine to defeat the Bridgeport Bluefish 4-1 Thursday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win, the Bears have won three straight to improve their second half record to 3-4, and their overall record to 39-31.
Bears catcher John Pachot broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning with a lead-off home run for his fourth of the season to give Newark a 1-0 lead.
Bluefish shortstop Nick Ortiz tied the game at one in the top of the sixth inning when he hit his third home run of the season, however the Bears came back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to pull ahead 4-1. Designated hitter Keith Reed, first baseman Victor Rodriguez, and right-fielder Jose Herrera each hit RBI singles in the inning.
Rodriguez and Pachot each had two hits for the Bears driving in one run, and center-fielder Marcus Nettles finished the game setting a Bears franchise record with four steals in a game, passing future hall-of-famer Rickey Henderson, among others who held the record at three. Ortiz led the Bluefish offense going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Bluefish starter Matt Porzio (7-5) took the loss after surrendering four runs on eight hits in six innings and Bears reliever Jason DiAngelo earned his eighth save of the season pitching a scoreless ninth.
The Bears and Bluefish will play game two of the three-game series Friday evening at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Newly acquired right-hander Jose Garcia (0-0) will make the start for the Bears against Eric Junge (2-2) for the Bluefish. Gates open at 6:05 PM to Cosmetic Surgery Night presented by New Jersey Plastic Surgery featuring at Bears T-Shirt giveaway (first 1,500 fans) courtesy of New Jersey Plastic Surgery and a post-game fireworks spectacular.
