‘PATS PUSH PAST ‘FISH IN TEN
The Bridgeport Bluefish were able to battle back from an early 6-1 deficit, but fell short as the Somerset Patriots took the win in ten innings with a final score of 9-8.
Somerset got on the board first with Teuris Olivares’ homer to left bringing in Elliot Ayala and Jose Morban to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. After walking Jason Romano, Mike Lockwood came back with a triple batting in Romano. The Patriots rounded out the inning as Lockwood scored off a passed ball. They struck again in the fourth with another run after Ayala doubled down the left field line and was driven in by Olivares.
The ‘Fish chipped away at the deficit as Bobby Malek scored from first off of Jay Caligiuri’s double to center field in the second inning. The fourth inning was just as fruitful for the Park City Nine with Caligiuri’s bomb over the left field wall sending Malek and Hoorelbeke home.
The ‘Pats responded with one run in both the fifth and sixth, but the ‘Fish came back with back-to-back home runs from Jesse Hoorelbeke and Malek decreasing the deficit to three runs. Those three runs were later picked up in the bottom of the eighth. After two quick outs, Hoorelbeke and Malek both singled and Lou Lucca reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Sandy Aracena then walked to score the first followed by a Steve Hine single down the right field line to bring in the next two.
The game extended into extra innings until Olivares stole third then advanced home on a bad throw to score the final run. Reliever R.D. Spiehs (2-2) picks up his second win of the year and Bluefish Eddy Ramos (2-4) records his fourth loss of the season.
The Bridgeport Bluefish take to the road for six games before returning home on Tuesday, August 7th, to take on the York Revolution. Tuesday is Two-For-One Tuesday with two-for-one specials on tickets and selected food items.
